Notorious for his avarice, in 1253 he was bribed by Henry to marry his eldest son to the underage daughter of the count of Angoulême, causing a royal row with the abbots of England, the Templars and Hospitallers, all of whom refused to put up the money.23 In 1258 he quarrelled with the Abbot of Bury St. Edmunds over rights at Mildenhall, and in retaliation he introduced the Franciscan Order into Bury against the Abbey's wishes. He led the barons' resistance to Henry III in 1258. After a poisoning attempt at Winchester, in 1262 he succumbed to another "at the table of Peter de Savoy, the uncle of the queen, along with Baldwin earl of Devon and other persons of note",24 including the earl of Bedford;25 so ending what Sir William Dugdale accurately called 'an active career'.22
